Description

The Lady Banks is an old-fashioned climbing or large shrub rose with arching branches that become literally covered in spring with abundant clusters of yellow miniature blossoms that have a very subtle, pleasing scent. The prolific flowering creates a lovely springtime display. Can be grown as a shrub which forms a very large mound or is a vigorous climber with thornless branches perfect for climbing and covering fences, arbors, and many other structures. When quickly established, Lady Banks Rose is one of the more drought-tolerant and disease-resistant rose species.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Lady Banks Rose can be grown as a larger mounding shrub or a climber. It is vigorous and grows quite large so don’t consider growing it in a container. Simply put, this rose is gorgeous, but needs its space. A fine addition to cottage gardens, yellow theme gardens and as a background in rose gardens.

As a Shrub

Growing in a huge mound 10 to 12 feet tall and 10 to 30 feet or more wide depending on pruning, Lady Banks Rose is ideal for use as a specimen or a natural hedge or privacy screen in landscape borders that provide it room to grow. We like to plant it along a fence line, sunny or partially shaded woodland border or on large slopes, and just let it grow naturally.

As a Climber

As a climber the Lady Banks Rose can achieve heights of 30 feet or more, with support. It is ideal for use as a climber to grow along a sturdy fence or to cover large arbors and other structures. If planted too closely to the front porch it’s possible it might take over your entire house…a slightly overwhelming prospect that is tempered only by the breathtaking display of flowers dripping from the soft, green branches. This could be a desirable attribute if you have a large, unsightly old shed or other structure you want to cover. If you don’t mind training or pruning it, Lady Banks a great rose for growing up large columns or porch posts in home foundation plantings. Just know that you’ll be doing a considerable amount of pruning. Also keep in mind that it blooms on old wood (last years growth), so be careful not to over-prune the older branches.

Growing Preferences

The Lady Banks Rose is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves but some afternoon shade or filtered sun is okay. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 6 hours of direct sun during the day. Has very good drought tolerance and disease resistance. We think this rose is more beautiful when allowed space to grow naturally, with little if any pruning. That said, she responds well to pruning. With regular pruning a Lady Banks Rose can be kept full and bushy.

Caution: This rose blooms on old wood so be careful not to over-prune the older branches until after the spring bloom.

This creeping Lady Banks rose bush came WELL packaged! It took me awhile to unpackaged it. Very beautiful and healthy with long vines. I can hardly wait to plant it. I live in Lubbock County, Texas, Zone 7. We have weather extremes. Most plants that are “drought tolerant” still need water here. I may have not watered the previous rosebushes, enough….or maybe got too much water! Any suggestions would be great! A family friend grew a Lady Banks in her back yard in arid Yucaipa, CA. It was huge and impressive after over half a century. With little care other than rare pruning. After seeing how enchanting it was, I trained several Lady Banks in medium large pots and provided a tall support. After a season or two, they grew into great looking rose trees placed around the swimming pool. They got lots of compliments. I didn’t mention how little care they required beyond seasonal shaping.

At first I rated 3 stars but this does not mean this is necessarily a negative review so please read on. The plant seemed fine when we received it but I think anytime a live plant is shipped, it might not look great when received. Once planted, our Lady Banks started to look unhealthy. We fed it more fertilizer in the water and finally noticed some improvement. This is a new company for us but so far we have been happy and the plants have otherwise looked good and healthy. We didn’t contact the company concerning the Lady Banks because we wanted to give it some time to adjust. So far, so good. Wilson Bros is one of the first companies I look up when looking for something we need for the garden. Their variety is great! ———————- WBG Reply: Hi Kim – Thanks for providing your review. The problem with some roses this 2018 spring season was late frosts that kept setting plants back that were trying to flush out. Now that things are warming up these plants are starting to flush out nicely and should do fine. Roses or any other plants that have little or no leaves on them won’t drink much water, so just be careful not to over water. That said, you probably already know that roses don’t like wet feet. Just wanted to mention for others who might read this review. Keep us posted on your Lady Banks Rose and let us know how it’s doing. Brent, I previously Ieft a review for my Lady Banks and want to upgrade it to a 5 star. It is doing excellent with new growth trailing up the trellis it’s on. The fertilizer mixed in water and basically just paying attention to it’s needs early on paid off. Thank you for your response.
